Well, I am a Vietnamese person born in the U.S., so of course I'm more fluent in speaking than writing. Vietnamese school bores me. 
At least I don't have Chinese school. Some of my friends have to go to both.

I wish my great grandparents would have spoken Czech to my grandfather and then he to my mom and then she to me so I could speak fluent Czech. But when they came to America they wanted to speak only English and " become an American".

Ah. What's your ethnicity on your father's (and mother's if there's more) side then? 
I feel that way towards Chinese. My mother's side of the family originally came to Vietnam from China. However, my mother doesn't know any Chinese dialects, so

Oh no! I'm taking German in school it's just that my father's family all came from Germany in the 1800s. And yes they are all from Europe.

So I assume you speak English at home?

Ah. It is nice to know more than one language like that.
I wasn't bilingual from birth though. Even though I was born here, my parents were not very fluent in English, so my first language was Vietnamese.
German seems like a nice language to learn.
