Moving swiftly on once more...

This is the Berliner Dom ("Berlin Cathedral" in English). This actually has an interesting history to it which you can read at the wiki entry ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Cathedral):

Image

These yellow tour buses sare quite common in major cities. I've seen them in a few places, most notably in Belfast but, of course, this is the Berlin sightseeing one:

Image

Passengers in a water taxi plying the tourist route on the River Spree:

Image

This store takes its name from the Ampelmännchen, the famed little traffic light, a cult symbol of the former German Democratic Republic. The figure has become so popular amongst tourists and locals alike that there is a shop, café and restaurant firm - the one in the photo below - (http://ampelmann.de) named after this little figure. It's a powerful symbol of the "Ostalgie" movement in the former East Germany. Much more information about the little figure can be found on the wiki page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ampelmännchen).

I didn't go in (didn't have the time) but if I go to Berlin again, I most certainly will:

Image

Berlin's tram network is amongst the largest in the world and the tram in the photo below is serving the M5 line. Almost all the tramlines in Berlin are in the former East Berlin, due to the remaining routes in the former West Berlin area almost all being ripped out and becoming bus routes instead:

A look down Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, in the eastern part of the city:

This is the exterior of a household goods store that operates in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal and Spain. They have a website (url]http://www.schlecker.com), but unfortunately this is only in the languages of the countries in which they have stores. I went in here for a soft drink - they had them (and at a reasonable-ish price too, which is better than can be said for most of Berlin!) but they weren't in a fridge and it was boiling hot outside so I decided to leave them:

Image

A mixture of cafés, a big man's clothing store (I went in and bought some very nice T-shirts) and a McDonald's too below the blocks of flats:

Another injection of photos, I think...

A big man's shop and a branch of McDonald's is in this building:

Image

I went up to this big man's shop which was on the second floor of the buildings shown in the last photo of my last post. I bought some T-shirts, then went along the terrace and took this photo of the street:

The unfinished state of the Europcar offices on Alexanderplatz:

The offices of Berliner Zeitung. The Berliner Zeitung, founded in 1945, is a German centre-left daily newspaper based in Berlin, published by Berliner Verlag. It is the only East German paper to achieve national prominence since unification. In 2003, the Berliner was Berlin's largest subscription newspaper—the weekend edition sells approximately 207,800 copies, with a readership of 468,000. Official website (http://www.berliner-zeitung.de/) (German-only):

Those are all great pictures. I like the architecture and the transportation. The food also looks good. :)

I'll have to start taking some photos, the trouble with me is though, I'm in that much of a rush that I miss anything of remote interest.

I'll post more when I manage to upload more to Flickr. It takes a while as I'm naming, describing (inc. finding street names!) and tagging everything as I go along.

Continued...

This is the Brunnen der Völkerfreundschaft (or the "Fountain of International Friendship" in English), a water fountain in the centre of Alexanderplatz:

Brauhaus Mitte from below:

A view of the DDR motorbike museum and a restaurant from the outside area at Brauhaus Mitte:

I spotted Brauhaus Mitte whilst I was walking around and decided to walk in. It was definitely quite expensive though - works out to be around £3.80 a pint. This brewpub produces several beers - I sampled their (4.9%) Pils and their (4.9%) Dunkel. I didn't much like the Dunkel at all but their Pils was fairly quaffable. I wouldn't go back because I didn't think the beer was up to much (and it was expensive) but it was a reasonably pleasant experience all the same:

The copper kettle inside the brewpub:

Afterwards I went to a nearby Vietnamese restaurant for something to eat. Here are two photos I took of the street whilst I was waiting for my food:

Image

I decided to try fried rice noodles with chicken, vegetables, roasted onions and peanuts. Wasn't bad at all, and came to just under €6:

Tequila! Stop being a tourist in those places you visit briefly.

The German police is currently in the process of switching from the distinctive green-beige-khaki colored uniforms and green-white vehicles to blue uniforms and silver-blue cars. Most officers already wear the new uniforms, except for some forces like highway motorcycle police. But some states still have many cars with the old color scheme in service. Just in case anyone is wondering about the odd color combination :)

I wish that classical buildings like that were still being constructed.
I loathe modern architecture.

I love classical and renaissance architecture, but my favorite architectural style is art nouveau. This is a photo I took in the Ruhr area city that I used to live in:

In Northern Germany where I live now, you mostly see plain red brick houses. I love the landscape, but the architecture is not much to look at. I miss seeing houses in different styles and with different colored facades.

Is Northern Germany well worth visiting in its own right then?
