The Jinny at Finmory series by Patricia Leitch. A series of children's novels about a girl living in the wilds of Scotland, and spending most of her time out riding across the moors with her horse. Her family didn't understand her, she was searching for meaning and spiritualism, and related better to an abused half-wild horse than to most people. I really identified with the character, I was just distraught I lived in town and couldn't afford a horse.

I've always enjoyed the Berenstain Bears series growing up. Every book had a lesson at the end.
