But you still steal and kill the babies, and when the mothers no longer produce milk you kill them too.

We steal the young from all animals. Whether taking kittens when they are very young to puppies or other animals. The animal seems after a week to forget they even had children so I can take the young and eat them. Mostly I think meat is just much more awesome than fruits or veggies.

Yes, if only it weren't for humans, cows would be immortal.

You know, I remember reading the 13th Animorphs book (I don't remember what it was called). Tobias (who was permanently turned into a red tailed hawk) eats a particular rabbit's babies.

It was really interesting to read him talking about why killing babies is better than killing the mother, especially considering how young I was when I read it. Of course, once he regains his ability to turn into animals, he goes back on this and kills the mother, then turns into her so he can take care of the babies.

Another interesting piece in literature dealing with meat consumption is in the first Dragonlance book. They're invited to a feast hosted by this woodland protector type character (in the form of a stag, I believe it was). When Caramon realizes that the woodland protector probably knew the deer whose meat he was shoveling in his mouth, he apologizes. The woodland protector responds by saying, "We do not mourn those that die fulfilling their purpose in life." The idea being that deer are meant to be killed and eaten by other animals (to those that insist this isn't true, well... think about what happens when deer have no predators).

Anywho. Is killing plants for their food any better? I've pointed out the root brain theory. There's nothing really different about killing a plant except that they look a lot different than us. Furthermore, we don't know what is good or bad treatment to a plant.

Yes, we do kill animals (and plants!) in order for ourselves to live. The thing is this: Would you rather have a long, miserable life or a short, happy one?

Well firstly, I don't think we should do that anyway  , but also with cats and dogs at least, the gap between birth and separation is MUCH longer than it is for cows.

Scientifically, that is not true.

Oh yes, those pillars of both literature and morality...

Animal; sentient, plants; NOT sentient. It's about doing the best you can.

A short, happy one of course. What's that got to do with anything?

It might not forget but it seems to not give a crap after a week. Be at our house and listen for a week and then after that no more howling.

The whole thing is not about morality as much as it is about guilt. It is easy not to feel guilt for killing plants because they don't squeal when killed, for example.

Just as a preface, let me say that I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm just trying to be honest here, since this is what I do for a living.

If you eat any packaged substance or anything that grows in the ground then you eat animals every day: Insects.

On every head of broccoli it is estimated that people will consume about 40 aphids
In every pound of grain the USDA permits up to two whole insects or up to 25 insect parts.

But you know, it's not a bad thing. They're high in protein and fiber, and farming them is nowhere near as bad for the environment as farming pigs and cows.

So in the end none of us are true non-meat-eaters. Some just eat more than others.

I'm a non-vegan because I enjoy tasty protein, food affordability, and pissing off neurotic leftists.

I am not vegan because I eat fish. Exclusively wild-caught fish, but fish nonetheless. And I eat eggs, sometimes. So I guess I'm not vegan because I'm an ovo-pescetarian

I would like to point out in refutation to the validity of the argument that plants can feel pain that a vegetarian or vegan who eats plants eats a lot fewer plants in his or her lifetime than the sum of all of a carnivore's meals will have eaten. A meat eater indirectly kills more plants than a vegetarian.

Of course, that has nothing to do with why I don't eat meat. I just can't stand the flavor, texture, smell, etcetera. It is completely because I am a picky eater.

Vegetarians and vegans are better known as dinner at my house. :P

Last night I ate a vegetarian, but my dinner tonight would have been vegetarian if I didn't put real bacon bits on it (bac-os suck!).

1) Nonetheless, they are do not feel 'pain' in the same way as us 'animals'.

2) As someone else has pointed out, vegans eat less plants than meat eaters, and therefore cause less suffering either way.

There is literally nothing you can do about that. The aim of veganism is to cause less suffering, not to wipe it out. That would be  ...futile.

I get plenty of protein. And I don't eat any meat.
