That's only one potential cause, he also might have had some other reason with more direct logic. This wouldn't make it any less morally horrific, but would at least mean it's unlikely to be signifying everyone starting to practice saying
Here's Johnny!It's a good sign we're doing a better job at keeping guns out of the hands of crazies compared to other English-speaking nations on this continent, which is something we get to be smug about far too often to still be smug about. But, it indicates some things can be done to significantly reduce the number of incidents even if it also warns us it might be very difficult to be perfect without bigger societal changes than just laws can cause to occur. Not being able to achieve perfection isn't inherently an argument against trying harder though.
Anyways, why ruin your mattress when you'll be just as safe leaving the knife on top of it, since you almost certainly will not end up needing to retrieve it (but just in case). Nightstand maybe?
