Dummkopf, the sound of that word makes me laugh.

I have a friend who's Asian, skipped a year of school, and is in Calculus BC in her sophomore year (which means she's basically a freshman in Calculus BC).
She also draws and plays the piano really well.
*sulks*

Not all Asians like that are going to get into good colleges. Elite colleges hate people with "no souls", if you know what I mean.

Albirea: Are you talking about the 8-year-old Asian boy or the friend I was just talking about? :o

I am talking about "super-Asians" in general. You have to have a good personality. I know too many Asians (especially Asian boys) who are very quiet and only know how to study, as opposed to people who know how to balance good grades with meaningful extracurriculars.

Okay I'll explain. Stereotype or not many consider Asian overachievers to be the "all-work-and-no-play" type, locked up in study doing thousands of sums. They allegedly have no mind of their own and aren't independent and lack a creative spirit. That is not what elite schools are looking for.

That is what I meant. Thanks, Jamie.

Ah, okay. I get what you mean now.

And a lot of Asians at my school tend to fill up all the extracurriculars because of that. :o

Ohhhh. I've heard of that stereotype before. You guys are living examples that it's not true! :D

It's a lousy stereotype, and I hope Asian parents can give their kids more freedom to explore what they like instead of commanding "you have to be a doctor!" or "you have to be an engineer!" or something like that. It's sad to say, but the most interesting Asian kids are often the ones with this freedom.

That's a must. The Taiwanese system is becoming more like the system in the US, and really that's not a good thing with so many parents still clinging to the Asian Mindset. Instead of doing what they love kids are starting to take up every imaginable extracurricular in order to get an edge in the high school application process. The *Clean Chatroom Sorry*s at the education ministry have been planning to eliminate high school entrance examinations by 2013 but heck are they doing it the wrong way. It'll just get worse for those kiddies.

The US education system is going downhill . They think cramming more and more tests and book knowledge down our throat is going to help. :? We are SO worried Chinas doing better. It's a second Red Scare essentially. :?

Greetings, Moonhawk! :D

Jamie: Ah, I see, but instead of using them to apply to college, it's high school. :?

It's best to choose extracurriculars that you're actually interested in rather than just doing them to fill up space in your application, correct? :o

Albirea: What do you want to do as a career, Albirea?

Liam: Yeah, with all the budget cuts. I wonder what they're doing with that money...
