While WP is having problems, do the following when posting to a thread:

If you get the error message "Failed sending email :: PHP ::" do not attempt to make the same post again.
Instead, use your browser's 'back' button as many times as necessary to arrive at the page you were viewing immediately before you decided to make a post.
Now, make your browser do a page refresh - you'll see that your post succeeded and it is present in the thread.

Those with smarter browsers using tabs could make this easier as follows:
Right-click on the "post reply" button and select "Open in new tab".
Make your post as usual in that new tab and when it's completed, error or not, close the tab.
On the original tab, showing the thread before your post, have your browser do a page refresh.
There's your post...

That'll work too, but it will refresh the status of all forums instead of the one you've posted to, plus you'll need to navigate your way back into the thread you posted to if you want to see if your post is in the thread.
