This guy's doing British Sign Language but it's very similar to Auslan.
I love this video clip.

I hadn't thought of that workaround before. a clever idea.

I was first taught Sign Language in primary school because I wouldn't speak.

my sister is a special educator and had to learn ASL, I think that pretty good of her to be able to learn such a complex language in such a short amount of time [2 years]. I doubt I would do that well, I wish I was better at learning other languages. :? I didn't speak until I was almost 4, they took me to the kid shrink who tried various things to find out why I wouldn't talk, then he had the bright idea to shout at me, "TALK!! !" then I shouted back, "NO!! !"

So the kid shrink got you to talk :P
Did you continue to speak after that?

I talked at around the normal time (so my mother believes - don't know how reliable her memory is).
I stopped talking when I started school at six.

I guess I didn't talk until I was good and ready. I know another person who began to stammer a little while after speaking more or less normally. when I am under pressure I stammer. being a hermit helps with that :alien:

Do you talk to yourself when you're a hermit?
Do you sing?
I can sing much better than I can talk.

Why do you think you may be depressed?

i live in my tin can out in the woods with me and myself, we have a grand ol' time  we have very animated and comforting discussions. Image my singing is much better in the shower  but I have forced myself to learn how to sing [after a fashion] and accompany myself on classical guitar [NOT the acoustic type with those lacerating steel strings :o ]. it seems to be helping my aging brain to resist aging. I am curious, are you an alto or tenor or some other register? it seems most of the best songs are written in keys above my natural register. :| I had heard that one of the techniques speech therapy types use to help with stammering is to have their clients sing and gradually segue into musical speech.

I'm an alto, I think.
I have a deep voice for a female.
I can't sing a lot of songs written for female vocalists - so I sing guy songs :P
I have an acoustic guitar with special smooth steel strings which are just beautiful.
I've used singing as a therapy for stammering - just as you described it.
Have you tried using a capo on your guitar to alter the key?

i wish I could sing some gal songs. I am early on in my guitar journey, less than 2 months, still struggling with basics like chord transitions and not buzzing/muting adjacent strings. meebbe I'm a slow learner? I am sure I might find a capo useful once I get more skilled. I got brain envy after watching that guy in the movie "orfeu negro" play "manha de carnaval" and I heard my doc tell me that at my age I better start exercising my brain, so I figured music was at least an enjoyable brain exercise. can you sing any elvis? or maybe kd lang? I may at a later date detune my guitar a whole tone or two. I have perfect pitch so I have a little wiggle room in that regard.

IMHO the music must NEVER stop, it must go on and on, come hell or high water.
