January 20 is the Feast Day of St. Sebastian according to the Catholic calendar of saints.
St. Sebastian, according to legend, was a Christian martyr who was executed for his faith in the 3rd century. Little precise biographical information is extant, and some critics believe the legend of Sebastian is a conglomeration of various stories of Christians persecuted by the Romans during the 2nd and 3rd centuries.
St Sebastian is often depicted in art as a young man or boy, tied to a tree and pierced by several arrows. However, the earliest representations of St. Sebastian actually depict an older man sans any arrows or other martyrological iconography. How the depiction of St. Sebastion evolved into its current, popular form is unknown. Some contemporary critics have speculated that the iconography of the young St. Sebastian may have homosexual connotations to it, but such interpretations lack any valid supporting evidence from historical sources.
