People aren't psychic. They understand they might have done something but are waiting for your confirmation and an explanation. If you blow them off at that moment don't expect them to care about your feelings going forward - you've just demonstrated that you won't communicate effectively so they'll feel entitled to divest.
Maybe they're the jerk up until that instant, but once you've responded like that you're also one. Decent people will just withdraw and reduce interaction and genuinely cruel people will treat it as an invitation to antagonize you further. It won't end how you'd like it to unless you respond appropriately when they ask (and attempt to save face) with "Are you ok?" Responding the way you describe also allows them to save face because they'll shrug and think 'whatever you c**t' as they walk off.

I don't like not helping out... I want to do my very best... But if I don't limit what I do I may find I am unable to work even part time. Umm. Anyway. I am at least doing something.
If I push myself too hard and get issues, every single thing I do is a great effort to do. It is like I have run a marathon and then started work. That is the best description I can think of.

I wonder if a lot of reasons for discrimination come out of this fear psychologically. Certainly ableism and fear of the neurodiverse, we're just that bit different to throw them off but not completely and it's invisible. But also - in the far distant past, would a white person seeing a black person/black person seeing a white person have the feeling of 'why is there someone who looks almost like me except a different colour'? Sounds very racist today but, if I saw an alien who was just purple or green but otherwise completely human I'd be freaked out.
