On my first day in New York a guy asked me if I knew where Central Park was. When I said I didn't, he said: "Do you mind if I mug you here?"
Paul Merton

With 8.4 million inhabitants packed into 305 square miles, New York is the most populous city in the United States. It is also the most ethnically diverse: 40 per cent of the present-day inhabitants of New York City were born outside the US.
Between 1990 and 2000, a million new immigrants arrived in New York City, most of them from south-east Asia and Latin America.
More than half the people who now live in Little Italy in Lower Manhattan are Chinese.

Essentially there are two places called China. One is the Peoples' Rupublic of China (or the PRC) which we all know as 'China', and there is also the Republic Of China (or the ROC), which is more commonly known as Taiwan.

silly fudo had no idea, thanks rabbitears :)

Despite their reputation, the French have fought more military campaigns than any other European nation and won twice as many battles as they have lost. The British may pride themselves on superiority at sea, but it was driven by the realisation that they could never win a land war on the Continent. The French Army has usually been the largest, best equipped and most strategically innovative in Europe. At its best, under Napoleon in 1812, it achieved a feat that even the Nazis couldn't repeat: it entered Moscow.

Pete Quaife of The Kinks lived in Canada for 25 years. I found out about this shortly after he passed away. That and the fact that Canada won 35 Medals in the Olympics last February made me more of a Canadian. :)

John Dryden (poet laureate of 1688) is the guy who came up with rule against ending sentences with prepositions. He criticized Shakespeare and plenty of other earlier writers for doing so. It was probably because the construct isn't allowed in Latin; however, it had always been perfectly fine in Old English.

QI Fact of the Day
In 2003, a poll of three million Germans voted Konrad Adenauer the greatest German of all time. Martin Luther came second and Karl Marx came third. No one was allowed to vote for Hitler.

In the Andaman Islands (part of India) there are 4 indigenous tribes whom are all under a lot of threat from the outside world, and who's numbers are dwindling. The Jarawa which has approximately 200-400 members, the Great Andamanese which only has 28 (although another source said 44, anyway it's a loooow number), the Onge which has 100 members and the Sentinelese which also has 100. An epidemic of measles in 1999 wiped away ten percent of the Jarawa population.

The Sentinelese are one of the last 'uncontacted' peoples of the world. They will not allow anybody on their island/s or make contact with people. In fact I believe they try and kill people who come too close!
It is speculated they saw the impact foreigners had on the neighboring tribes 200-300 years ago and decided on the best course of action to preserve their culture
