I'm mad at my husband because we sold a $300 guitar on ebay and then he insisted on mailing it USPS but didn't insure it so when the guy who bought it got it, it was damaged and now he wants his money back. My @$!@#$%$ husband works for the postal service and knows first hand how badly packages are handled but stupidly didn't insure it!! !! and we really really really needed that money!
In my experience with eBay, the buyer is completely responsible for the shipping. If you offered different shipping options, and he chose USPS, uninsured, it's his problem. If the only shipping option you offered was USPS, uninsured, and he bid on it and won, it's his problem.
The buyer is supposed to look up the details of the shipping options
before bidding. When you bid, you agree not only to the price but to the shipping details and the item description. If the item was obviously damaged during shipping, the buyer has to prove that it was because it was not packaged properly - that it is the fault of the seller, not the shipping method (USPS in your case). Unless things have changed in the past few months.
Actually, eBay is full of forums and tutorials that are quite informative. I imagine this type of situation and how to handle it has been addressed multiple times in such places. Look under "Community". There's a lot there.
