I've used GIMP (Gimp2, actually) for about 2 years. I tend more towards getting most of the image set the way I want before doing (heresy!) 'post-work', but it does pretty good thumbnails..

It can do most of the things Photoshop can do, and there's a 'photoshop' skin, or methodology (I think it's called Gimpshop, but google it to make sure), that can use Photoshop filters, etc.

There are gazillions (10 to the excessive) pages of filters, masks, tutorials, add-ons, etc out there for Photoshop. Not so many for Gimp, but whaddayawantfor free?..

GIMP will also work on Linux, Windows, and a couple other OSs. I'm running it on Win2k, but it works well on XP as well. Vista....well...that's a whole 'nother can 'o worms... My avater was sized in Gimp, and thinned out to get under the size restriction.

I now have my second GIMP creation ready:

And yes it is Jazz from Transformers, I made the backround of the image transparent... then pasted the image of Jazz infront of a gradient backround, which I made using the blend tool... and then used the 'predator' setting, in 'Filter'

and there ya have it...
