This song is awesome in a horrible sort of way - apparently it was written by a man based on real letters from his great-grandfather to his grandfather, after the latter emigrated from Ireland to America during the famine. There was some statistic that less than 20% of famine immigrants ever made it back to Ireland, this man included. Makes you wonder why - what happened with his life in America, why he never made it back to Ireland as his brother did, or ever saw his father again. I have relatives who left Ireland during this time, and they never made it back either.
