I'm anticipating that part of the problem is that Bronze Age cultures had no use for vocabulary that describes such concepts (
so... there's no Minoan word for a quark?), just like most modern cultures have no need for a specific word to describe the priest who cuts the throat of animal sacrifices, which likely would have been a pretty useful word 3000 years ago.
