My brother does air duster sometimes....and I don't want him to die of that. I wonder if I should get him a whippet set up so maybe he'll do that instead as from what I hear it can be less harmful while providing a similar high. And I am all for harm reduction like he must get something from it but I would like to encourage a less deadly option. And seems wippets could be that, which yeah I'd rather he do that than inhale air duster.
My understanding is that Whippets/nitrous oxide isn't very similar to inhalants, like the propellants in duster or thousands of other products. They might be somewhat similar in some ways though. As far as I know Diethyl ether produces similar effects to inhalants, but without the same degree of severe side effects. Nitrous oxide and ether have both been used as anaesthetics, so I might be wrong about how similar nitrous is to the inhalants he's using.
Part of the problem with most inhalants that are abused, is that the toxic effects are inherent, there is no real way to manage or reduce risk. Saying this as someone who doesn't really apply any value judgments regarding people's intoxicants of choice, huffing inhalants is about as dangerous as intoxicants go, both short-term and long-term. They're neurotoxic and also often carcinogenic, they kill your brain and cause cancer; I would strongly encourage someone who is using them to find pretty much any other intoxicant to use instead.
Whippets would be safer.
So would ether.
Would he maybe consider having a drink or hitting a bowl instead? If he really wants to get f****d up (like, if those don't provide what he's after), salvia's available at a lot of convenience stores in Ontario and would also be much less risky alternative.
