Thought I might have a chance at getting an apartment sometime in the not-too-distant future, but according to reviews, I can only do that if I can tolerate heat/AC not working, maintenance people flat-out telling me they don't get paid enough to do necessary repair work, and basically being treated like a piece of freshly-chewed gum the manager has trodden upon from the moment I sign anything

Online reviews are both useful and problematic. Sometimes I stop considering something due to bad reviews like you described, if I have other options. I also have to remind myself that people have a tendency to only review things when they are upset. Perhaps you could talk to the landlord about your concerns? You could request additional language be added to the contact that ensures the maintenance concerns will be addressed to meet standard living requirements.
Yeah, my mom told me at first that the reviews were pretty much par for the course, but then as I continued agreed that it probably wasn't the best choice. I did some more looking around and found a place that actually has mostly good reviews from what I saw, it's a bit more expensive but looks to be well worth it. Now I just need to wait another couple of weeks for a PET scan to see if I'm going to be in a physical condition to be seriously looking at moving in any time soon.
