Yeah, our reactions to extinction, disease, pollution, overpopulation, soil exploitation etc is the real problem.
The most important problem is the over population. With that problem fixed, all the others would be greatly reduced, so that one is my choice.
Extinction, disease, pollution, overpopulation, soil exploitation are all reactions to something else. They are all, or are mostly, man made problems. For example; overpopulation is a reaction to human use of technologies that have allowed population growth beyond certain 'natural' thresholds. Humans have reacted to the world in certain ways that have led to the arising of the scenarios that you deplore.
