Now see, that's my problem with the ipad... you really don't get squat for $600.00.

Let's compare one with my humble, $300.00 aspire one, shall we?

..for $600.00 the ipad gives you a 1 ghz processor, 256mb ram, and 16 GB of storage and no keyboard...

for $300.00 my aspire gives you 1.66 ghz n280 atom processor, 2GB ram, 250GB hard drive, a REAL KEYBOARD, runs windows 7, microsoft office, plays netflix video effortlessly, plays mp3s, plays MANY REAL PC GAMES click here...

Yeah... for $600.00 the only thing the ipad does well is separate the tragically hip (read FOOLS) from their money!
And just think, in 4 months that $600.00 ipad will be discounted to $150.00 (still not worth it) when Apple rolls out ipad 2.0!! !

Ohh, you gotta be blazing there on that 1.6GHz Atom

As I said on my post in the last page, there's nothing your crappy laptop can do practically with that hardware that the iPad can't.

Office, Netflix, mp3s and games are all things the iPad does perfectly.

You can say that all you like, but there's NO WAY and device with 256MB of working ram can perform like a device with 2GB of working ram PLUS a 250GB hard drive.
You're either just being silly or you have no grasp of how computer technology works. Even the positive reviews of the ipad complain about painfully slow load times and the ipad's inability to run more than one app at a time!

Bottom line is the WORST windows based netbook blows the ipad out of the water in every category. You're comparing an overpriced, overgrown ipod touch to a real computer, for cripessakes! That's just nutty! :P

Not really. The iPad is very fast, and multitasking is coming in the next software update.

An iPad with a specifically made mobile OS runs better than a similarly powered craptop with a full OS on it. See?

Everything people use netbooks for can be done better by an iPad, simple. Unless you were hoping to get some professional video editing done on your Atom processor?

This is the part you are not comprehending.

They are NOT SIMILARLY POWERED. The netbook processor runs 50% faster... 50%! The netbook has 8 times as much RAM as the ipad. The netbook has 16 times as much storage as the ipad. They are not similar. The ipad runs a mobile os because it is a smartphone... A smartphone WITHOUT the ability to make phone calls!! !

Video! That's it! I bet we could work this out over a video chat... Wait, I forgot... You have an ipad.

YOU CAN'T DO VIDEO CHAT CAN YOU?

Are they gonna 'software update' a camera (and hardware robust enough to run it) on that $600.00 puppy anytime soon?

Get back to me when they do... I'll be waiting in front of the camera on my $300.00 'craptop'. :P

A 1.6GHz processor running a full OS isn't fast. I have a netbook myself, I know. It takes like a minute just to load up OpenOffice. The iPad opens it's word processor in mere seconds.

Video chat on a tablet would be rather impractical IMO, but it's coming in the second generation iPad anyway.

And I dunno about you, but I have a webcam on my laptop which I have hardly ever used in the 3 years I've owned it.

^^^ Okay, I'm done giving crap about your ipad... If you like it, great. To me, it is not a good value. Actually, I was quite amused when you suggested it as an alternative to the kindle...

The whole point of the thread is that I'm too cheap to buy a kindle (to read free books, by the way), so there was no chance in hell I'd consider a $600 ipod!

Thanks for the diversion.

Now, back on topic.
Is there a good ebook reader with FREE 3G wireless net access for under $100.00?

Will Amazon.com get mad at me if I buy a kindle, use their free internet access but NEVER buy any books from them?

This thread made me have a dream that the eReader people and apple had a price war and all the gadgets mentioned here were $133. Clearly, I was dreaming. :(

iPads will get cheaper as time goes on. At the moment, though, they have a new niche product which they can charge lots for, so they do. But in a few years there'll be cheaper models, from both Apple and other companies.

"Proper" games? :?

With the advent of DOSBox, $300 hardware will run anything from the late 70s up until...hmm...at least 2003. Maybe up to 2005, but it really depends on the game, how tweakable the graphics settings are, etc.

.... of course, if I stopped buying game I could pay for a kindle.
