That is an arm race. I need a bigger weapon to outmatch the other opposition. This is a dangerous cycle to get into.

That is complete BS. Substantively speaking their isn't any difference between what a civilian good guy will carry (pistol) and what a bad guy will carry (pistol).

Taking away projectiles will not remove crime, which is why people want to remove them in the first place. I think Daniel was saying this.

And I agreed, but I've also said that making them legal won't do much good either - it's basic logic that it's harder to escape a criminal with a projectile weapon.

It depends on the distance and the weapon, and the person in the fight. The gun is not this magic totem of death, no matter what your society has conditioned you to think.

How about the people who use them for legitimate purposes though, like hunting?

I said in my previous post that you don't need a real loaded gun for recreational use for stuff like target practice or whatever.

Hunting, though, should (and I think is in the UK) be illegal, because killing innocent animals for pleasure is horrible and sadistic.

And having the animals overpopulate, damage the ecosystem, and starve because nothing keeps their numbers in check is not cruel?

Managed hunting is necessary because human development has disrupted the food chain of the ecosystem.

Guns: They are devices that only act if they are acted upon. Do forks and spoons cause obesity?

Cigarettes: Well, they're not good for you and can certainly lead up to death but only if you make a habit of USING THEM.

Comparing guns and cigarettes; you can spend a lifetime with guns and typically never do harm to others or yourself but if you smoke enough it's sure to cause issues.

Speed: As in driving a car or riding a motorcycle? Speed is an act but the faster you go above what would be considered safe on a given road or highway the more at risk you place yourself and others. Going too slow is dangerous because everyone else has to weave around you at high speed.

The answer to this question is too obvious but I'm bored so I figured I'd indulge.
