Sometimes I think I have learned this.

Sometimes I think I have learned the exact opposite.

i did not really learn it. i am cynical and i said that because i pretended i believe that all the people that say they have AS really do.

what i was trying to subliminally convey was that if i am to believe 90% of peole here, then i would think that AS and NT are identical.

In the year I've been here I've gone back and forth and back and forth with the differences and similarities. Sometimes I see similarities to myself in the people who are the most different from me. Sometimes I just can't relate at all. Sometimes I think, "I have learned that although I am nominally neurotypical, I must be genetically at least Broader Autism Phenotype or I wouldn't see things that way too."

but that presumes that AS people and NT people have no intersection. like a cartesian diagram where AS is a closed circle and NT is another closed circle, and nary the 2 do overlap.
i do not believe i am 100% outside the circle of NT'dom. we are not totally divorced in every way in our beings from each other.

Other times I think, "we could not possibly be more different from each other". (This is referring to all posters as an aggregate, not specifically to b9 who I am quoting.) Still other times I think, "these similarities that I see are similarities amongst all humans and are part of the gigantic area of overlap between autistic and non-autistic wiring."
i agree with that

Janissy wrote:
All in all, after a year I sometimes feel that I know less about the intersect or divide between autism and not than I did before I ever found this place.

i do not believe what i see so i have not changed my opinion. i know i am autistic and i believe very many here are not.

But one thing I now know for sure is that the more metaphors a person uses, the better I can understand. So I do thank you for that, b9.

i just try to explain to my own mind the intangible things i see as stylized concretions of concept. i interpret things by way of subdivision into small blocks, and i build my way back up to a crude understanding by reassembling those blocks with reference to the natural things i always understood.
no need to thank me. i do it for my own sake of understanding.
stay well

yes i know monkey.
i know you from your posts and your youtube videos and i am certain that you would not make fun of me.
but last night i was so tired.
i have often been made fun of by people who talk to me using words that i said, and they reformulate them in a sarcastic way, and they think i am too stupid to realize that they are not sincere and they laugh at me when i reply to them with no idea i am being made fun of.
i am a bit slow in understanding whether someone is serious or mocking.

so i constructed a barricade around me in case i was being mocked.
today i was not tired and i saw i should not have said that to you.
sorry. you are a good person and i do not distrust you.

anyway i have one more thing to say in this thread about what i have learned here.

i have learned that there is no place to build my "sandcastles" of ideas and statements.

if i post (build a sand castle) too close to where the waves of attention by other members crash in, then my thoughts will be washed away and relegated to the pages of unread and buried history before they are noticed by someone who thought they were valid
.
if i post in dry and uninhabited areas, then my thoughts will wither in the thoughtless dessicated dunes of inattention and crumble and blow away in the winds of inattention.
and so la de da de doo.
i really could not care less.

I'd like to see the post that taught you this :P

One of the first things I learned from my psych was that a room full of aspies would look just like a room full of normal people, at least aesthetically. So I'm not as surprised by the variety of types here.

I've always known that. Just didn't know how to put it into words. We must share some similarities if we're the same species.
Seems like the more I learn about us the more our similarities and differences with NTs seem more complicated and difficult to fully describe.

I wish I could say it like you b9. You say things so clearly and make such clever jokes. You're a good dude. Even when I was nuts I always knew that. I always repected you. Just want you to know that. I hope you don't hate me for all the stuff I said back on May 19th.

I have learnt from WP that the internet is filled with a lot of people who are themselves filled with hate, and that there are so many bigoted and hypocritical people out there. These are the people who only care for themselves and their way of life. If anyone person is different or has a different perspective to them, then these folks are treated with disdain and insulted, and every thing associated with them is criticized. These are the same people who moan and groan whenever someone shows prejudice towards them, or when others show any animosity to them. The internet (including WP) is just a way for these people to say and do whatever they want. They don't care of the consequences which arise when they say things, and openly criticize and ridicule anything which strays from their narrow minded way of life. These are the same people who claim to be “open minded’ but in fact have a very small tolerance level to anything they cannot understand, or more to the point, do not want to understand.

These are the people who find fault with others, hold grudges and keep a burning hatred for certain people. They use hate speech, mock and insult people based on their beliefs, beahaviours, cultural propensity and their faith. They make no effort to understand the other person but instead expect complete consideration of their point of view. They also never hold back when creating division and differences between people. They expect people to accept what they say but are not willing to understand the next person.

The worst thing without doubt is the fact that they criticize and hate every facet of people who follow a faith, way of thinking, or behaviour etc which they do not agree with. If they disagree with something or someone they use abusive language and insults to make their point of how right they are, and how wrong others are. Just a simple “I do not agree” is never enough. They have to find avenues which are not even relevant to the subject in order to deride or put down someone or someone’s beliefs and behaviours. So to anyone or any subject which does not get their approval, they show complete contempt towards. Never is a simple “I disagree” or “no I do not agree with what you say” enough. The first thing that comes to their mind when facing someone or something to which their narrow minded way of thinking hates, is just that, to use hate. “I do not agree with you, so I will insult and deride you because I cannot, nay will not, accept your way of thinking.”

And they use this way of thinking with a guise of “I am completely open minded”. The internet is just way for them to say the things they really want to say. To give a voice to their burning passion of hatred towards anything they do not accept. To disagree is never enough for them. They have to manifest their disagreement by using taunts and insults towards the rest who are different.

I learnt form WP that there are way too many people who in normal life keep their prejudices and hatred towards things, hidden. When you walk pass them on the street or sit next to them on the bus, they keep these ideas and thoughts to themselves. But on here, there is no deterrent, so they usually say what they want to, knowing the consequences are not the same as that in real life. So in other words they are just cowards, who are too afraid to show their real beliefs to the real world but are very macho in saying these things with a cloak of anonimity around them.

(disclaimer: NOT everyone on WP acts as the above. There are a lot of great folks on here who don't feel like arguing or creating conflicts to get their kicks.)

Would you say that this is a good or bad thing? I'm just interested in the way people act so when I come across such people on the internet or in real life I find it interesting. I'm curious as to whether or not you would've preferred to remain "ignorant" to such people who do hide their hatred in a situation where negative consequences limit them.

I very much agree with this; especially your points 1 & 3 combined... so if you find someone who seems to have a lot in common with you, including some special interests then work up the courage to PM them. You may make a new friend. You've nothing to lose.

[quote="b9"]that asperger people are just like NT's in every way./quote]

This is true for me as well.

Other things I've learned:

Not to obsess about Wrong Planet to my family, friends and any one who'll pretend to listen.

That I take too long agonising about how my post will come across which results in someone else beating me to it in the Off The Wall Forum...hence my absence from this forum lately...but I'll be back...

I have learned that it's a true comfort to find others who actually share my, somewhat twisted, views. :?

I must respond just as delicately to people with AS as I do to NT's.

I have learned that there are so many other people out there like myself, which makes me feel a certain degree more "typical" than I used to.
