I don't know if its the same for you though?In America it's a lot more confusing and expensive to get a mobile phone. Different networks use different frequencies for 3G (so a 3G phone will only work on 3G with one network, if you want a 3G phone to actually get 3G signal on another network, you have to buy a new phone), you have to pay for incoming calls, and data plans are a lot pricier.
Mobile phones are the only thing where we aren't "rip-off Britain"
