I wouldn't worry too much about salmonella if the eggs came from a US farm. Chickens get tested regularly for this disease and the farms have a high level of biosecurity - excluding free range.

Think again:

http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm222501.htm - Just this week. Food safety is very poor in the U.S. Many recalls don't happen until AFTER consumers get sick.

From the article:
Quote:
...voluntarily recalling specific Julian dates of shell eggs produced by their farms because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Translation: One of their chickens tested positive so they pulled all the eggs from store shelves. Even a positive chicken does not mean that the egg is contaminated.

Salmonella itself is very benign. It gives you bad diarrhea for a few days and then your immune. Its harder on small kids and old people, but that could also be said about the common cold.

So basically, salmonella is not any great concern in the US. Its just pumped up by the media to scare people.

A voluntary recall only means that the firm is recalling the affected products without the FDA forcing them to do so. It has nothing to do with the severity of the recall or illnesses. Salmonella is not benign.

Let's see if you feel the same way after YOU get sick.
