I only troll people who deserve it.

I sometimes post silly things on Forums, but it's hardly malicious, and I have been accused of trolling and hijacking threads due to the fact that I have a lot to say about a particular subject.

I was involved in a discussion after a post I made, and told a commenter I agree with her, even though what she said was not in complete agreement to my original post. To me it's common courtesy, to think about other people's feelings and thoughts if I raise an argument. She also didn't believe me I could have considered the point she made prior to writing my post, and that I can include more than one POV when I discuss something. I also used to use smilies until then, to show I'm making a light-hearted discussion, but I got told by posters that smilies are 'passive aggressive' - whatever that means, because it means nothing to me.

Does that ever sound familiar. The same kind if thing has happened to me many times. Seems like just because I'm willing to post my opinion about something, but also willing to admit it's just an opinion, taking other POV's into consideration, some users take that as either an unwillingness to stand up for my position (spinelessness), being argumentative, or worse, outright lying.

Worse yet are the situations in which, in the moment at least, I get a negative impression from someone else's post, express it, then clarify that I might have misunderstood them, that I don't feel they were being deliberately disruptive, and end up being called a liar. I don't understand people who can draw such firm conclusions about others from a momentary brief encounter online, knowing nothing more about me than what they've read in a few posts.

Makes no sense to me.

Trolling is the thrill one gets when having the feeling and illusion of power in their otherwise powerless hands. They say things simply to invoke responses. I'm convinced that in real life, they live boring, meaningless lives and are generally unhappy with themselves, so they get behind a keyboard and try to make others share their misery and pain by saying malicious and outrageous things knowing that someone can't walk up to them and punch them right square in the face. They're simply cowards...nothing more, and the best solution to dealing with one is to ignore them. If no one cares what they have to say or respond to them in any manner, they'll fade away.

Trolling is dropping a lure the "fish" hopefully can't resist, hoping for a bite, then the fun of reeling them in, letting out line, and reeling them back in while you slowly get them to follow your boat wherever you lead them.

Watch what you bite. 8) If it looks too tasty, it's probably got a hook buried in it.

Or, just be smarter than a fish, and hopefully smarter than the buffoon on the boat.

I don't know. Some people are just happy when they upset other people I guess?

Oh interesting discussion. I don't troll, but I like what's called counter-trolling, which can be similar. The internet in general, and mmorpg's in my special case, are filled with raging people who lash out at everything and everyone, are mean, or engage in more specific forms of trolling like kill-stealing or other game-related things. In those cases I step up and try to get them mad at me, usually acting polite while insulting them between the lines, implying I'm a woman when they say "u have no girlfriend" "u p***y" or something in that line to mess with their heads, and even though it makes me feel a bit dirty on the inside, going with a "lol U mad", or just repeating thenexact same phrase at whatever they say will work when they're angry enough. And how it feels? I laughed out loud once after this guy who was mistreating everybody on my team ragequitted after some thorough verbal smacking. Now that I think about it, it feels good to have certain amount of power over other people, and in my case I guess I like when they thank me for getting rid of the troll, and giving them so fun in the process.

Honesty... now that you know the awful kind of person I am please don't hate me :P . Any questions? 8)

Urban Dictionary: Trolling Definition

I sometimes use trolling to make a point to people who rage because they think it's all the rage to rage.

Example: Last night on Battlefield Bad Company 2 (PC), me and a two other friends were playing on a hardcore server. I told my friend that I was only going to have one more game (had a pizza on the way) and that's because we were going to use the CG (rocket launcher) on everyone (once you get to lvl 50 you have to find new ways to keep the fun going). The reason I do this is to get the reaction "CG noob" from people which prompts me and my friends to respond with "It's an anti-personnel weapon you think c**t", followed by continual use to purposely annoy them. If they weren't so ignorant in the first place and understood that the weapon was designed for use as an anti-personnel weapon, then I would not do it. Most players have come to realise this and don't say anything, but there are still a few ragers out there that just love to moan.
I also love to use the Spas-12 with 12g slugs to kill people, it requires tremendous accuracy yet people still call me a noob for using it, so I use it more.
So I troll the ignorant, inept ragers who just love moaning for the sake of it. I love it when they moan, it makes the game so much more fun :).
This is an example of what I am talking about although the footage is not mine.

Oh I'm aware of that. I'd classify those guys as ragers, more than anything. The troll in question would actually be me in those cases I guess, baiting them for a reaction, be it making them stop, or having them rage so much that they come off as silly, and go away. Ragers make rather easy targets too, so I guess I'd have that in common with trolls too :?

Now an actual troll would be a different thing. They know all the tricks I know, and a lot more I don't, so the most I could do would be keeping up with them, until they realize I can't get trolled easily and move on for easier prey, or if it starts getting out of hand, ignoring them is and will always be a sensible option :D
