I'm too slow to catch them by hand. I need to use some sort of long implement to hit them if I wanted to kill them. I'm slow yet accurate with my swing. I used to be able to whack them out of the air with a 1 inch wide ruler.

That reminds me of this Monty Python skit. They're hunting mosquitoes, not flies, but the principle is the same!

I tend to disdain the senseless slaughter of insects.

I mix up a juicy green cocktail out of a sachet, place it in special jar with top opening. LIke the song goes. You can check in but you can never leave and they drown in their orgy of putrid rotting smell of meat. I collect about 250 grams of flies this way. But dont stand down wind of it. Makes you want to puke.

I usually spray it with a windex bottle. It's more precise, and then watch it drown in the windex pool that forms.

I like your method. Sounds like you have as much fun with those pesky annoying flies as I do.

flies die on their own. sometimes i will rescue flies (with the tumbler and cardboard routine), but if i lose track of them (i.e if they are energetic), i generally forget about them. there are very few flies where i live.

when i was a child, i became aware of an elderly gentleman who was seemingly mentally disturbed. he walked around the streets with a fly swat, and he swatted every fly that he could see. it was hilarious to me. i watched him chase flies around houses and trespass in properties in order to hunt down his quarry.

then one day, i was walking along a bush track to get to a shop on the other side of a gorge, and i saw him hunting flies and he was seemingly frothing at the mouth with a sort of maniacally rabid intensity, and i thought he was completely insane at that point, however i almost died of laughter (i had a respiratory reaction that was very unpleasant because i laughed beyond my limits).

fly's do a backwards sommersault as they take off, thus they need not be slapped directly, just clap above them and they fly right into it, distance 1-3 cm varies by flyspeed.

other than that i usually don't bother unless it is really getting on my nerves,

I'll have to try this!

Axe body spray does the trick and leaves your room smelling fresh.

I torture the flies I encounter by spraying them with hairspray. It's what they deserve for buzzing in my ear.

Used to catch and squish with hands. Avoid touching them now.

I don't,I let them out the window or let the numerous house spiders do their job.I'd be worried about the toxicity of the spray you use, most are neuron toxins and cancerous.A lady I know that had a bug phobia used mint rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to kill them, she said it worked quickly. The electric bug zappers also kill beneficial insects that may prey on the flies and mosquitos.I saw a bug vacume in a catalog, you can suck the bug up and then release it,this is for the squeamish that don't want to use a glass to catch them.
