Compared to most people at least....I care nothing about clothing, shoes, fashion, jewelry, etc.....Furthermore...I probably have what can be defined as an idiosyncratic sense of humor. That is.....I find certain things (including myself) funny that few others do. Now that's not to say I don't find humor in things that many others find funny as well...but all these contemporary sit-coms (most of which I watched i've watched for three minutes or less and already realized how predictable and trite they would be) aren't among them. The whole "nerd-culture/chic" thing may as well not exist at all as far as i'm concerned. I really don't have any use for child-like foolishness and frivolity and both seem to be the fundamental root of all this. It's adult humankind being playful and whimsical....just like children. I don't say all this simply because i'm some dour Lord Saruman skulking about the stygian gloom of his tower, (though I pretty much am like that....lol  ) I just find it all meaningless and uninteresting. There's just an emptiness to it that feels like a mental straight jacket even when I ponder upon the sort of things we're talking about here. Nor do I say any of this because I believe my intellect, tastes, values, etc....are superior to anyone else's. When it comes to my intellect in fact....I feel greatly deficient to others (I have mention many of the reasons why I feel this way in many other WP threads and i'm not interested in offering the "whys" again here and now) and I always have.

I don't feel I need to portray myself (either physically or in my demeanor) in a stereotyped manner in order to enjoy a certain genre of music, literature, art, a certain academic subject, recreational activity, (surfing would be a good example), etc..... I don't fit into any subculture at all and don't want to.

As far as clothing is concerned....I simply wear what's comfortable, practical, inexpensive and as nondescript as possible. I despise attention for the most part....so in that sense I DO have SOME concern about what I wear and ill-fitting, dirty, color-clashing, etc...attire tends to attract attention eh? I would probably walk through this world invisible if I could.

Also I live in South Florida.... a tropical rain forest (or tropical monsoon....depending on the perspective of the particular climatologist/climate model one is consulting) climate with an average of 181-210 days when the high temp is 86F or above.

This is according to the criterion for plant "hardiness zones" established by the American Horticultural Society and likely more or less accurate.

That said....I typically wear shorts, light button-down shirts, polos, T-shirts and closed-toed sandals. I have short hair, no tattoos or piercings and I never wear jewelry. Many people who see me would never guess that I have a major passion for music like this and used to play guitar a similar band.

You've hit the nail on the head. FINALLY someone understands this in the way I do. I wash 4-5 t-shirts all the time so I can wear them routinely because they are comfortable. I can't concentrate when my freaking shirt seams are itching the back of my neck and collar of the shirt is slightly too tight. Calculus and computer engineering need to be learnt without distraction and the fact that the barbie doll behind me who hasn't flunked out yet feels a compelling need to "up-do" her hair and wear jeggings with Ug boots is.... well it's her prerogative. I dress to impress...myself. And I like it that way.

I like the nerd-chic phenomenon. I think it shows a societal acceptance of oddness which has been sorely lacking in the past.

Yes! I completely agree. It's one thing to be a geek (which I am) but that doesn't mean I have to fit some stereotype about dressing, or talking in a certain way, or liking The Big Bang Theory.
People who claim to be nerds really irritate me. Wearing chunky glasses does not define a nerd!

This all reminds me of one day at work.

Started working for an inventory counting company.

Was running late-threw on my company shirt - and jumped into the car.
Got to the retail store we were assigned to count that day.

As I was counting all day I noticed our district manager eyeballing me the whole time- but couldnt tell whether he was starring with disapproval or what-and couldnt figure out why.

Finally near the end of the day I did a double take and noticed that the company name was backward on my shoulder-then realized that I had been wearing my shirt inside out all day.

I quickly changed it around.

My coworkers expressed dissappointment because they all had assumed that I was making a deliberate radical fashion statement!

So I just played along-"what?..Oh! Well- ya know - the DM was looking at me funny."

I guess that I had been an early practioner of 'nerd chic'.

This nerd chic diarrhoea gives me a stomach ache, as far as I'm concerned, it's another silly fad. Also, hipsters  .
This vid pretty much sums them up for me. I've actually SEEN stuff like this happen IRL.

I don't mind it. It's easier to blend in when people pretend to be nerds. When I was in elementary school I designed websites instead of playing sports like everyone else. I got teased about that.
I wear nerd glasses because I need glasses and I hate small glasses. They make me feel claustrophobic. I've always picked the biggest frames I could get away with. I'm happy that bigger glasses are in style now.
I care about fashion, but I don't care about brand name clothing.

You know what I think? That a lot of the scriptwriters of Big Bang Theory and other series considered "nerdy" were "outsiders" while they were at school in the eighties, and now that they are scriptwriters they can write about their own lifes, so they write about comics, fantasy books, etc. Sometimes with pride, sometimes with affection, sometimes with bittersweet sarcasm. They are creating a massive interest to this kind of stuff because they are making "nerdy" references in every scene from every nerd movie/series. People receive that influence and absorbs it as if they were sponges, and there you have the results, a lot of spectators are enthusiastic followers.

If you make a cool rockabilly series tomorrow, you'll have some of those followers leaving manga and anime to join the new trendy thing, they'll learn twist and they'll say that "Grease" is too mainstream while "Cry Baby" is a cult masterpiece. Or maybe they'll prefer "Grease" because it's so mainstream that it would be "ironic" to love it, I don't know how the hipster's mind works

Several years ago I had these acquaintances (IT guys) that felt superiority over some "chicks" because these "chicks" didn't know what "Big Bang Theory" was. These guys loved the first season of Big Bang Theory because it was yet quite unknown, exclusive. Probably now they dislike the series because it's very popular :-P

I've seen a lot of teenage girls wearing t-shirts which say 'Geek' on them. I'm not entirely sure what that's about.
