I also hate the 'ding-y' music in commercials now. I'm sure you know what I mean. it's like a baby's music box, and they're trying to lull you into a complacent state where you will follow along with their nonsense. Yes, you and I are no more than stupid babies with credit cards to these people. And what is really sickening to me is that it seems to be working like a charm, since they all do it.
It's not supposed to be persuasive. The music for the new Prius commercial is very effective at getting my attention. I don't want to buy a car anyway because I don't drive and if I did drive I would look for a competitor out of spite. However, if I wanted something and I didn't know where I could get it I would only find out who the major sellers from the commercial. No I don't like being insulted by commercials featuring talking animals and ding-y music but I still have that want and if I only know about the companies that use 'ding-y' commercials I have no choice. Either I buy from the company that's using these condescending commercials or I don't buy it at all.
In most cases I just boycott companies that use commercials with talking animals, flashy gimmicks, and things that seem insulting to customer intelligence. There's usually one that isn't too flashy.
Obviously if everyone's doing it there's no choice.
I don't have the same attitude towards advertising that I did when I was a little bit younger. I used to see advertising as evil. That was my black and white oversimplified view. I still find certain aspects of commercials to be condescending and almost insulting in some cases but I don't consider advertising to be an absolute evil.
