One alcoholic I know is from wealthy parents who pay all her bills. Another only drinks after work--but has to drink every night. And another one is mooching off me.

I have no idea. That is the main reason I only drink on social occasions (rare). If I started drinking alone I'd surely start doing it every time I felt depressed and then pretty soon I would be an alcoholic. I can't afford to be an alcoholic so I'm not going to take the risk. I also have a high tolerance as it seems to take a lot for me to feel any kind of "buzz".
