Scroll down a bit to see the original listing for the dress itself, and a neutral photo of it (like you see in online shopping sites).

WOW! I really thought it was a color balance issue! Amazing.

Funny how people are saying, but, but and but, we're not talking about the real dress! But the picture!

Yeah, no. Sorry, your brain is interpreting the picture incorrectly (there's nothing wrong with this), and the evidence for that is the real dress and those that see its real color.

Well, we're talking about the photo because the photo is all we've got to go on --- until that other link showed a properly photographed picture of the dress, then the truth was clear.

I accept that I was wrong and was perceiving the photo wrongly. But that's the entertaining part of all this -- there was I thinking I was looking at bad color balance.

This is the crux of why this thing has become a meme, because clearly many of us are thinking this is the way we must interpret the image.

Either way it's a good bit of fun, and I was quite surprised.

I think most people misinterpreted it, which is probably why it's so popular.

I guess there's some study that can be done on why some people see the real color and others don't.

According to the owner of the dress, it is "Royal Blue and Black".

According to this article in Wired Magazine, she's right!

Blue and black and the image has too much contrast giving it a washed out look and it also looks like a yellow light is being shined on it. Running through an image refiner, it looks like this:

That makes it purple (or royal blue) and black--definitely.

Are some people really unable to see the bluish color?

What is this some sort of flaw in the matrix?

More important, WHY is the worlds people so obsessed and transfixed by this meaningless sliver of superficiality? The shirt in my closet is blue.

It's not really superficial.

It's dealing with perception, which is how we view the world in this instance. When someone says it's different to what you experience, even though your brain is telling you you're right, there goes your brain, firing off trying to make sense of it all.

It's like that time when you realize you can't read nonverbal cues (facial expressions for example), though you thought you could.

The color of that dress is not so important that I would waste time with what myself, or some other human, might perceive the color to be. Irrelevant, world debate. I think there are entities out in this world who are having a yank at how much worldwide attention is being given to this goofy issue. What is Kim Kargashian wearing today? Same meaningless difference. Ho-hum.

Hello everyone,

There has been a HUGE Internet debate on trying to figure out whether this dress is blue/black OR white/gold. I personally believe that the dress is blue/black.

What do you guys think ?!

I actually see is as pale purple/brownish. The reason for the illusion is the over-illuminated background.

Jesus H. Corbett!!

What the ---- is up with this ----ing dress? Just about every website I've been to mentioned him and even in the local tv news and local news websites!! !!

Like wtf?! Seriously, wtf?!

What's up with this so-called "white and yellow" dress (are the people that see those two colors perhaps color blind?)? Is this a marketing stunt gone wrong (because no one knows who manufactures him and, I guess, majority of the females don't give a toss!)

And people that see anything that resembles white/gold in it need to have their eyes checked ...or their brain ...or both!

(and I'm very serious that I think it's a massive publicity stunt)

I'm really puzzled by this,as I don't see it as anything other than blue and black, but it's definitely an eye-opener on the subject of how we each perceive the world.
The dress was bought here in Scotland and when appearing on the tv news in real life is clearly blue and black.
An interesting slant on the perception of colour is that in Russia they perceive 'blue' and 'light blue' as entirely separate colours whereas in most other countries they are considered as different shades of the same colour. In some cultures
blue and green are effectively regarded as merely different shades of the same colour.
