None nearby. There used to be a "Hemmakväll" (Evening at home) nearby, it's a large chain that sells/rents out DVD/Bluerays, but they mostly live on candy/softdrink sales to go with the media rentals/purchases. Another chain called "Buylando" fell apart about 2 years ago and "Hemmakväll" bought the remains. Basically physical stores are an endangered species over here.

They are up to some heavy competition such as Youtube and similar streaming services, i buy/rent movies on youtube regularly, Broadband is commonplace over here, entire country is wired with fiber networks so capacity isn't a problem, same for wireless internet - i can stream 1080p over 4G with no problems in the middle of a forest.

The only DVD/Bluerays i buy today are special editions and older movies that aren't available on streaming services. I'm also currently converting all my physical media to MP4 so i don't have to bother with plastic any more, CBA to get out of bed and change disks when bingewatching old shows i bought.

I found it amazing that one could even tape TV shows and watch them later!

I think the reason VHS fell out of favor is because you cant easily release whole show seasons on them. But they don't have the issue of sometimes being scratched and unplayable NEW IN PACKAGE.

But now you can watch shows whenever you want with streaming services...and you don't have to have taped it yourself to watch later, or just get the DVD when it comes out.

Not everybody has the internet in their homes. I don't.

I know that, I just think its cool that it is possible to do that...and I like DVDs because they're easier than tapes and I usually like the packaging because the whole season is contained in one box rather then multiple seperate tapes.

Looking back in hindsight about the actual format --- VHS was crap.

But when it first became available it was all we knew, and I was thrilled just to be able to watch a movie of my choice in my own home, whenever. I was even more thrilled to be able to record TV shows and movies from TV and watch them whenever, keep them, etc.

When it was all new I was excited as heck with it all.

But still it has to be said NOW - VHS was not a high quality medium. Tapes could stretch and jam and break. Machines could get dirty and not play things properly. You had to manually forward to any place you wanted to access.

I vastly prefer DVDs and Blu-rays now that we have them. VHS tapes don't hold a candle to them.

I still have a VHS player and a few tapes. When I view them now it's a nightmare compared to becoming used to the pristine HD of today's Blu-rays and even DVD.

I don't miss actual VHS.

It's the physical store experience of physically renting in itself, that I miss. The ritual, of going and looking and picking out something and taking it home; the anticipation and the preparation.

Early Betamax machines were superbly engineered and built like battleships - my early 1980s Japanese-made Sony Betamax C7 lasted twelve years, but in later years when companies like Sony and Panasonic shifted manufacturing abroad to places like Malaysia, Thailand and Slovenia, quality plummeted. I took half a dozen VCRs made by these companies to the local recycling site between about 2000-2010 (all of them VHS by then of course). I've still got some Beta tapes, but nothing to play them on.

I agree , it's such a shame that Betamax lost the format war.

You could set recording to six hours but then the picture wouldn't be as good. My parents would fit like 3 or 4 movies on one tape. I also remember when I wore one of them out. It had Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree on it and Alice in Wonderland and I was not happy when I couldn't watch those anymore so my parents got me the Winnie the Pooh tape and my grandmother bought me Alice in Wonderland and I was happy again. It also had Bugs Bunny cartoons on it too but those were not my favorite and it had a family clip on the beginning of the tape with me playing on the floor as an infant and I didn't know that was me then as a baby. I just thought it was another baby and it was in my parents old house where we used to live. And then it jumped to the Disney channel and then played Winnie the Pooh.

I wouldn't even know where to find one around me now, and I even live in a major city with most amenities. The only access I would have to renting movies now is to use online streaming services. I have a pay-as-you-go account with the one that used to be called Blinkbox. I can't afford the expense of things like Netflix.

The only problem with streaming, for me, is that I also can't afford an unlimited data plan for my internet service. I get 10 GB per month and if I stream all the movies I want, I overrun my data and get hit with massive fees for going over.

So my stream rentals have dwindled to once a month and now none at all.

It makes me sad, because back in the hayday of physical rentals, I was constantly at the video store and kept up with the latest movies.

Do you know anyone with netflix? you could see if they'd let you use theirs. Me and my brother just use our moms account.

Also though have you ever thought of switching phone plans? I mean that sounds crappy that you get fees for going over and such. I use MetroPCS and there is no such thing as fees for going over and its just 40 bucks a month, it also has data maximizer which means it helps preserve your data to get more hours of streaming.

I mean realistically home internet is the best for streaming...but if you can't afford that, then obviously that isn't an option.

We get unlimited now and our phones also connect go a network so it doesn't use memory when you are connected to a network so if you have internet at home, you can connect your phone to that and watch movies on it or on your computer.

The main factor in their falling out of favour was their size, I'd say. Plus all the hassle of physically winding the tape forwards or backwards to find a particular scene. Later VHS tape was also of much poorer quality than the earlier stuff (up to mid 1990s) and was more prone to unravelling or going mouldy.

"Please be kind and rewind." I remember those stickers on the tapes.

I remember laser discs and they were like DVDs because you could skip to a part in the movie but they didn't have the bonus or extra features on them like DVDs do now but the early DVDs didn't have those either but started too around the year 1999.

I have never had that problem. :? I even have a few tapes from the 1980's and lot of them from the 90's.
