what about ridiculous class systems? I think were less class orientated

Not true, it's just not as visible. The 1% perhaps owns a greater chunk of the world's wealth now than at any time in the past century.

Speaking as a single mother, it’s better to be a single mother than to raise a child in an unhappy situation. I’m glad that society is more accepting of separation and divorce.

Teen pregnancy dropped between 2016 and 2017. I don't see what that's got to do with the 1940s.

Raising a child alone is no doubt often easier, but not necessarily better - for the child at least.

Teen pregnancies were often kept secret (the girl would go spend some time with an old aunt etc.) and so was (more often than you'd think drug use). And you'll find no statistics for cheating on your spouse, beating up the wife and kids (a man's house was after all his castle), abusing animals, stealing or cheating at work without being caught and various other immoral and harmful actions (some of which were not illegal back then)

Edit: treatment of mentally ill people is also worth mentioning, it was abysmal compared to these days, when it's still quite bad.

Classes considered in the purely social sense seem to me a necessary and valid consequence of the inequalities in ability and virtue that can't be eradicated.

At least in some situations, as strange as it might seem I prefer people who are open about their lack of morals. The other type is a lot more dangerous.

Considered in and of themselves, I'd agree, but it's lot more complicated than that. In particular, a society where people can be open about being immoral without fear of censure is one that encourages immorality. Guile, in comparison, is a small price to pay to avoid the inversion of values and anomie we have today.

I haven’t found that people are open about immorality without fear of censure. There are still laws in place, and we are free to choose our own associates if our morals aren’t always dictated by the legal system or reflected as we like in society.

Yeah, I know. It makes my life easier sometimes but I agree with you. It can be incredibly dangerous, especially with social media as a platform.

Teen pregnancy was very common in the 19th century and earlier.

Raising a child alone is often better for the child than in an unhappy home.

I used to like talking about the "good old days" with elderly people when I was 7-8 years old.

The fact that so many more marriages end in divorce now points to a greater rate of adultery, although one would have to adjust for the fact that divorce is so much easier now (it's the only legal contract where the faithful party is punished).

Wife beating was perhaps a greater problem than it is today, but at least a woman could walk the streets without fear of being raped, beaten or robbed. At least women didn't routinely descend into drug addiction.

I believe that the way a society treats its most vulnerable members is one of the important factors in evaluating its moral health. Things are far from ideal these days but at least they improved significantly over the hundred years or so.

Women feared going out alone in the 19th century.....and many times, they weren't allowed to, anyway.

How do you figure it's often easier with one parent? Sure, one person making a decision is often less hassle than two people coming to an agreement, but a single parent has to play the roles of both the mother and the father. They have to provide for the child but also look after them, spend time with them and nurture them. Then they probably want some time to themselves sometimes too. Raising kids is really a two-person job.

It's very hard to be the only parent to a child.
