...I didn’t even know this was going on and I live across the pond. No one told me about it until now.

Glad I did it looks like quite a celebration. Wish I could of been there. Someone may have then told me why on earth we have the queen on our money over here, even though we’re supposed to be a separate country. I’ve heard countless times why this is. I’ll look it up again but I think it’s weird if Canada has been its own country for a few hundred years and we still got the queen on our money.

I honestly wouldn't care about a bunch of rich, inbred monarchs with no current actual political power if the U.S. had people like that, and I sure don't care about another countries rich, inbred monarchs who have no political power, either.
The royals seem to be more like celebrities than politicians, at least compared to American celebs & American politicians. People on WP tend to be less obsessed & less concerned about celebs than typical NTs are, unless we have a crush on one(that's me)

No, I do not give a s**t about the royals....they reinforce the class system

 Yeah, that's a great one too.

The OP could've posted this to the News section of this site. Or a moderator could move it there. Plus if you're looking for more British content, then the upcoming confidence vote that Boris Johnson is facing might stimulate some conversation.

...

Here in Australia the jubilee celebrations have been on the news for the past few days, and it looks like it was a really nice, big celebration in the UK. In New Zealand it also coincided with the Queen's Birthday public holiday, so most people there got the day off.

There's been plenty of positive coverage, although naturally it also triggered discussions about the relevance of a monarch overseas being Head of State here. Australians had the chance to become a republic in the late 90s, but instead voted to retain the monarchy. The Queen's personal popularity remains quite high here, so I doubt we'd try again while she still reigns.

Not highly politicised, but we've had some wild weather over the past 2 or 3 years – even more so than usual. From catastrophic bushfires just before the pandemic started, to months of destructive flooding on the east coast earlier this year. And now there's a polar blast from Antarctica sweeping over parts of the country. It's certainly been newsworthy.

Climate change does feature in political discussions here, but it usually isn't that big of an issue in elections. However I suspect all the wild weather we've had may have contributed, at least in part, to the downfall of our previous government in this year's federal elections – especially considering the number of new MPs who were elected that advocated for stronger climate change action.

Your country gets a lot biblical type plagues- swarms of animals. At one time (if I understood the news right) you guys had a plague of too many mice, AND a plague of too many feral cats, at the same time! I get it that they are both invasive species with no natural enemies downunder. But you would think that- surplus cats and surplus mice would...cancel out! Lol!

That combo does sound odd. I would guess that the surplus food supply allowed the cat population to thrive. The mice could have attracted the cats & the cats mated with each other.

I'm Australian and have an interest in the institution of the British royal family, Not as a fan, more in terms of anthropology.

Been fascinated to watch the facial expression of the aristocratic class forced to be seated near the former Duchess of Sussex

Best comment I've seen on this site for a long time!

Brits and others here (I'm also other BTW). If you miss something on this site, just post it yourself. Maybe it won't get a lot of replies, but surely it's worth seeing if someone else is interested too.

I'm not interested in royals myself, but happy Jubilee to those of you who care about it. I hope you celebrated your queen and enjoyed yourselves :)

Heard absolutely Zero about it here on the West Coast of Canada. I think the last of the people here that really truly cared about the British Royal Family mostly died with my grandparents' generation. The royals aren't all that relevant to modern Canadians, at all.

There's also a whole lot of stuff coming to light about Canada, Provinces, and various Churches horrific abuse of Indigenous people across the country a mere few decades ago. And all of that opens people up to learning a bit more about recent history and realizing that the British explorers & settlers that popped over here a couple hundred years ago murdered about 100 Million people in a massive genocide. There's not a whole lot of respect earned or owed for that. The royal family has outlived it's relevance and either needs to disappear or be reinvented with some greater good type purpose to fulfil for the world.

Usually what the Royals do, and the British do in general generates a lot of interest in America. I think this time around we were preoccupied with the mass shootings.

I did watch some youtube clips of it. It was a reminder that nobody does pageantry better than the Brits. It had a conflux of things going for it. She personally is not controversial, it was likely her last one, and the kids are at the right age to be cute.

I have always hated the concept of having kings and queens.I especially dislike the queen and British royal family so much because I am Texan and American and we dont support having royalty.I hope the insitution of the British monarchy gets abolished before I am a old man.
