They would probably require a motive to do so as well. If memory serves, apes arent all that fond of water, but they would need a pressing desire to cross a body of water they couldnt jump. As far as dexterity and manipulation of items goes, they probbly could... they just dont need to.


Why build a bridge when you have a tree to sleep in?

The sit-com was done in the early 70s. 'Lancelot Link - Secret Chimp' starring Lancelot Link and his offsider Mata Hairy. The worked for an organization called A.P.E, and the villains were from C.H.U.M.P. Sort of based on Get Smart, because the C.H.U.M.P. leader was more like Sigfried.
