I've been a history buff for decades, and that's why I wouldn't mind visiting (very temporarily) but not living, in the past. Most of these periods didn't have the choices we do today. History is written for the most part by the rulers, the intellectuals, and not many of the ordinary Joes out there.
You'd have to give up (except maybe the 1900s), modern medicine, a large part of your diet (eat locally wasn't just a good idea then, it was often your only choice), refrigeration, hot showers, phones, the Internet, tolerance (in many of these eras, NTs would just kill or enslave you for being different), etc.
Most people in the Middle Ages grew up, lived, and died on the same plot of land, and never traveled (unless they went on pilgrimage, which wasn't much of an option for most folks) more than 7 miles in your entire life (which would be about 30-40 years on average, right up to the 20th century). No checks and balances; if someone in a suit of armor wanted something you had, you gave it to him, or he rode over your corpse to take it from your family. The Church was absolute; you could get 7 years pennance for certain sexual positions (I'm not making this up), and they got a cut of your harvest. I could go on and on...
1977 was ok, I was in college then. Saw Star Wars 7 times, but you have to wait years for the next installment (this was the appeal of Battlestar Galactica; we were between Star Wars episodes, and Star Trek had been off the air for over a decade..
It was a sleazy period to me; everyone was in the midst of the sexual revolution, and everyone was 'getting more' than I was (until a couple decades later, when we found out most everyone was lying). Rock was stuff like Boston, Journey, arena stuff...or (shudder) disco. Carter was president, and things just got more and more depressing. There was a recession just before, and just after that. it wasn't all bad, of course, but it was a decade of bad clothing..
