I don't know how Hotel Chocolat do it
They really captured the flavours of carrot cake in that chocolate

That's what made me happy today

Sound cool? It did.

Extendable you said. Very nice. Matte sounds modern.

Irish people are serious about sticks. There are shillelaghs and all sorts.

Me I just like sticks. Sticks with fiddly bits? Yes I am for this

And I bet you wield it with grace and aplomb, which frankly adds to the coolness factor.

Personally I would like a shillelagh.

Quote:
Most commonly, the chosen wood would be placed up a chimney to cure for a duration of several months to several years; the accumulated layer of soot gave the shillelagh its typical black shiny appearance.

The less frequent methods were to bury the shank in a dung pile, or in slaked lime. The stick may require protection from its dung bath by being wrapped in well-greased oiled brown paper (steeped in hog's lard or oil).

or maybe just to poke at one being made.

I grew up somewhere with snakes, so a stick for beating the ground was a thing you had. Feels a bit odd to go a-stomping without a stick.

To be honest I don't know what you're talking about

I didn't know you had to watch out for snakes in Ireland or am I missing something

Oh I am sorry. I do that a lot, leave gaps.

'Stick' here is shillelagh, which is a sort of culturally significant walking-stick that people get a bit passionate about.

There aren't snakes in Ireland. But my earliest memories are of Australia. There were a lot of tiger-snakes. I like them but they are quite poisonous. Luckily they are more scared of you than you are of them! So when you go walking you stomp your feet and beat the ground.

I didn't come to Ireland till I was in my 20s.

I think of myself as Irish but I wasn't really brought up to be anything in particular. My parents thought it would be better for us to be citizens of the world.

My accent is confusing for people. In Ireland people tend to guess I am from the other side of the country (there are lots of accents here) or South African. English people guess Irish or Welsh or South African. Australians guess English or Irish.

Actually, when I was first diagnosed the psychiatrist said I had a made-up accent, which is also possibly true. I think it's something to do with how I mimicked or didn't mimic the people around me.

I can mirror people emotionally, but the problem here is I don't really mimic people. Or I don't internalise the rhythms and sounds of speech around me to the degree that is normal. So my accent is a mixture of all sorts of things but it has never sounded quite like the people around me.
