In Spain, they also speak Catalan (in Barcelona) and Euskara (in Basque country).

Thalassemia, or Mediterranean anemia, is derived from the Greek words for "sea" and "blood." Beta thalassemia is common in Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Corsica, the Middle East and North Africa. Alpha thalassemia is prevalent among Asian countries, notably China and Thailand. There are three degrees of severity: minor (trait or carrier), intermedia and major.

Elephants like to make nests in trees. Not many people know that.

The urine of a female (human) is not effective enough when it comes to marking territory, because it does not contain enough Testosterone.

Most people are not aware of this but there is a hidden hour after midnight called the Dark Hour. Those who are not aware of the Dark Hour simple skip experiencing it but those who are live in experience a 25 hour day.

Social_Fantom - the dark hour sounds really interesting!

the zodiac is divided into 4 elements: earth, air, fire & water

in the recent filming of The Phantom of the Opera when Gerard Butler played the phantom, all the music was lowered by a third step so instead of hitting the (in)famous high E at the end of the phantom of the opera, Christine only hit a high C

The most densely populated city in the united states is none other than...Union City, New Jersey (although it is not the most densely populated municipality in New Jersey, this particular distinction goes to possibly Guttenberg NJ)

(from one source only but ~) did you know that the average life expectancy over the world in 1800 was about 27 years. Around 1900 it was 30 years and around 2000 it increased to about 65 years old.

And still rising.

Scientists believe that the greenland shark lives up to 200 years, perhaps even more? 8)

Many species of adult mayflies live for only about 30 minutes.
They emerge from the nymph state of metamorphosis, mate, then die.

The New York-Newark-Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area (an means of evaluating the area encompassed by NYC and satellites) has more people and a larger economy than the entire country of Australia.

The male platypus has venomous spurs on their hind legs that's powerful enough to kill a dog.

The word "sine" (as in the sin(x)) in English comes from an Anglicization of a Latin word which was a mistranslation of a crude Arabic transliteration of a Sanskrit word.
