I'm now taking a medication that causes nightmares and another that stops nightmares.
As a result my brain got wise and stopped dreaming at all.
I don't sleep long enough for REM cycles most nights, at about 3 hours.
If I manage to sleep a bit longer there's no evidence of dreaming at all.

i wonder if there are psychedelics/nootropics that might mildly counteract that?

Nightmare causer: Intuniv (ADHD)
Nightmare blocker: Prazosin (PTSD)

If anyone can find something to combat this effect I'd be most grateful.

For one thing I'm sick of running on empty with next-to-no sleep.

No, unfortunately, because it raises blood pressure.

Vyvanse and Intuniv raise heart rate but not BP.

(I'm a high stroke risk.)

I took Ambien every night for over ten years, on prescription. It actually causes amnesia, meaning it's hard to remember the dreams, but I did have some doozies when I was on it. Those are the dreams I used to describe here in these threads. Now that I'm off it and taking Intuniv I seldom dream at all. Zero recollection of anything. Last night I dreamt about Ferris, though. I can't remember much of it but I was with him and his GF, and gave them both a huge bear hug.

omg I just remembered another dream from this morning!!

It was sooo weird!

There was a giant stack of 800 thick mattresses stacked one on top of the other out in public, like a giant skyscraper tower made of beds. I had to sleep on the top one permanently. It was a cloudy day and I woke up feeling terrified at my plight because if I rolled over I could fall off the side of my mattress and die.

There was no ladder or staircase to ascend or descend these mattresses. When I wanted to get off the tower of beds I had to wait for the weather conditions to be safe (no rain or wind), and very carefully just manoeuvre myself so I could pinch the little seam lip on the side of the mattress, and put my toes on the seam of the mattress below. Then I'd climb down like a rock climber just using those little seam things.

I'm not usually scared of heights but holy cow, that was terrifying. There was a chance that my entire mattress would slide off the stack or the whole stack would fall down at once.

The weirdest thing is that other people were sleeping on the other 799 mattresses but I never saw those people and it wouldn't make sense because they'd be squished between layers. When I finally got to the ground I kept asking random people where the other sleepers were and how they wedged themselves in without being suffocated or crushed.

i dreamt i was with another wp member, we were riding around in an mid-century auto, i got in and she drove most happily, then i looked down at my feet and noticed i could see the road going by, my feet supported on a bit of curved metal. i looked at her and she told me not to look down at my feet.

There was a lot more and I knew it when I woke up, but here's all I remember:

I was in a big place like an airport with huge windows and lots of those horrible silver chairs with steel arms. There was a linoleum floor, and I think a moving floor thing like at airports for walking fast.

I discovered a baby laying on her back across the arms of the chairs. The back of her head was resting on two arms where the chairs were pushed side-to-side, then her back was over the chair seat and her lower legs were resting on the next set of arms. Weird. Abandoned, but kind of swaddled in a receiving blanket. I picked her up and someone told me who she was. She was the granddaughter of a famous person who worked in the restaurant of this building as a cook. He left her there while he was working. They said the baby had been on life-support for three months prior and was supposed to die because of a birth defect in her brain but she was released and expected to live. It was the type of recovery that was world-wide news.

I took the baby to the restaurant to show the grandfather that I was taking care of her during his work shift. He had a white chef jacket on and he smiled and nodded at me from across the restaurant as I stood outside in the corridor area. I know who he was from real life. He's an actor but I don't know his name because I'm faceblind. It's driving me crazy. Thin guy. Maybe Gordon Ramsay actually but no, I don't think so. I think he looks like that but he was in scary movies.

There was a lot more to this dream but I've forgotten it now.

the key to dreaming is attitude, you insist to yourself you will remember your dreams, you will, upon catching the merest fragment of a dream, amplify it and replay it in your head repeatedly until you get up and set it down on paper or computer.

99% of the time, if I dream at all, I don't remember it. But last night something really weird happened that I didn't even know was possible.

I was dreaming that I was queuing to get into a nightclub that was owned by Rodney Dangerfield. To get in to the nightclub you had to do something 'entertaining' for Rodney, if you weren't entertaining, no entry. There was a grand piano and I decided that I would play the piano badly (the only way I know how) at the same time as reciting a limerick. So while I was queueing in my dream I made up a limerick. I never got to perform it, because I woke up.

The weird thing is, I remember the limerick I wrote in my dream and it's an actual limerick. It scans logically as well as having the rhyme scheme of a limerick. It's not a good limerick or anything, it's not funny, but it is a limerick.

I had no idea you could do that in a dream.

I lived in some other house and I had a lot of workers there, cleaning up the fall leaves. They had leaf blowers going all through my house (?), and there was an old man outside with his granddaughter getting all the leaves on my front walk. They were using some sort of conveyor belt. I kept telling them it was only September and the leaves hadn't even fallen yet but they didn't care despite the fact the trees were still full of green foliage.

When I was outside watching the conveyor belt, a cop was there because of possible noise infraction complaints. Somehow he said he could smell pot and asked if anyone in my house had drugs. I said my son usually has a bong but pot is legal here and he buys from the government-run dispensary. Somehow I forgot that my daughter might have something too. It was like she didn't exist. The cop asked if he could go in my son's room to check. I was trying to text my son to say a cop was going into his room, not that he had anything to hide but it was early morning and his girlfriend was there and they'd want enough notice to get dressed or not have a panic attack. It was one of those things where the numbers on my phone kept vanishing and I couldn't figure out how to text him.

The cop knocked on his door and I saw them pull out a whole wooden drawer from under his bed, full of drug stuff. In real life he has guitar cases under his bed so I was shocked. They shut the door so I couldn't hear but I saw him looking at a mound of something with a magnifying glass. Then his cop-partner came in my bedroom and showed me how to fix something. I assumed everything was good because I could hear the first cop laughing in my son's room but then he opened the door and asked if I had a pen (?) so he could "get things rolling with small claims court" to charge my son for having too many drugs.

It was really believable and not the type of dream I've ever had before. It really freaked me out. I just went in my son's room and scoped it out but there's nothing there right now, so whew.

i dreamt i was in a college dormitory somewhere, and i hadda go really urgently, and went to the lavatory, which distressingly was filled with female students, i nevertheless found an empty stall, only i found i had to lay down a blanket over the toilet before i used it, and when i sat down finally after all that trouble, i tried to #2 but nothing would result.
