My high school resource room teacher was crazy. She told my mum that what works for other people might not work for me and we need to ask what works for me. What did she mean by that?

That doesn't sound crazy at all, it actually sounds like very good advice for raising or teaching folks with significant neurological differences.

It's also quite literal. Your teacher was telling your mom to listen to what you have to say about what helps you learn and what doesn't help and take that feedback into consideration.
