Mach 2.1 - I got bumped onto the Concorde, London to NY, back in the late 1980s. Total surprise, and it was right before Christmas.
The two coolest things I recall are (1) that we were high enough up that you could see the curvature of the earth and the darkening of the sky towards the ionosphere, and (2) we landed in NY an hour before we left London (local time).
Since I was living with a much loved probably-also-Aspie at the time I took very detailed notes about our altitude, airspeed, everything I could think of (the plane displayed stats at the front of the cabin,
, ) so he could have the closest thing to a seat next to me. No cellphones then so no pix. But I'll never forget it.
(Edit in: oopsie. It was BA001, how cool is that, and so help me, after we landed and as we taxied in, I was on the "good" side of the plane and got to see BA002 - Concorde NY to London - taxi past on their way out!! !)
(God, those were the days.)
What's the greatest height and/or depth you've ever reached, while still standing on the Earth?
