I know some scales. I struggle with sheet music and have to rely on tabs. Most popular songs for the guitar have guitar solos which I find unnecessarily difficult and frustrating to pull off. The few songs I can play all the way through don't have guitar solos and have chord progressions that I can easily memorize. If the chord progressions change too much, it discourages me. I feel like if I practice at a song but can't memorize it no matter how many times I try that I will never learn it.

many of the songs i played were not memorized. i sometimes taped a note with the chord progressions onto the top side of my guitar where i could see it while i played.
