QI Fact of the Day

In 2007, Esquire Magazine named Gianni Agnelli (1921-2003), the Italian industrialist and head of the car giant Fiat, one of the five best dressed men in the history of the world, alongside Gary Cooper, Beau Brummell, Edward VIII and Pope Pius V (1504-72), supposedly the inspiration for Santa Claus.

QI Quote of the Day

"Bureaucracy is a giant mechanism operated by pygmies."
HONORE DE BALZAC (1799-1850)

So one of the best-dressed men in the world was an inspiration for the red, fur-trimmed bloater known as Santa Claus?
Clearly, I've led a sheltered life. 8O

QI Fact of the Day

The bioluminescent Giant Siphonophore can grow 130 feet (40m) long - almost twice as long as a blue whale - but its body is only as thick as a broomstick.

Antonio Jose Herrera, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, grew a complete third set of teeth. All of his previous set of teeth were kicked out by a horse when he was 10 years old.

(Makes me wonder why we can't all just grow new teeth if we lose some.... It already happened once in our life, why not again and again?)

Exactly, one of life's biggest questions. Unfortunately, it might never be answered....

Anyway....

Joseph Samuels, sentenced to death for burglary in Hobart Town, Australia, (1803) was granted a reprieve by the governor ofter the rope broke 3 times.

lucky guy, seems pretty fair though.

The very first website and web server was Info.cern.ch. According to Netcraft, there are now more than 227 million websites, containing 65 billion web pages.

I actually thought there would have been more than that.

Women in medieval Europe often fought men in Mortal Combat with clubs in order to settle judicial disputes - but to make the fights 'fair', the man was required to stand waist deep in a hole dug into the ground.

mortal kombat!! ! :)

now look at nuts..

Peanuts, almonds, pistachios, cashews, horse chestnuts and pine nuts are not nuts. So the health warning on a packet of peanuts (may contain nuts) is, strictly speaking, untrue.

So peanuts, also known as groundnuts, earthnuts, goobers, pinders, Manila nuts and monkey nuts, aren't nuts: they are a type of pea which grows underground. They are native to South America but now widely cultivated, notably in Georgia, in the United States. Some people are so severely allergic to peanuts that eating a tiny amount can be fatal; but these people may not be allergic to true nuts.

Every time a Darter Bird, from Panama, dives into water to catch a fish, it has to spread its wings out afterwards and wait for them to dry, because they become waterlogged.

i very recently had good cause, or good enough, to talk about fudo.. so here's a copy & paste.

Fudo is 'the immovable one', or Fudo Myoo, 'immovable wisdom king'.
he is the destroyer of delusion and the protector of Buddhism.
his 'mystic name' is Joju Kongo, meaning literally 'eternal and immutable diamond' i think.
he is a Myoo, (wisdom king) & the best known of the 5.. or sometimes 8. he is the destroyer of delusion and the protector of Buddhism & is also the patron deity of the Yamabushi, ascetic warrior monks who used to very occasionally help the samurai.. but mostly live in solitude on mountains.
he is also counted as one of the 13 buddhas of japan, but is not a buddha. more a protector & servant of buddhism, depicted with 'kurikara', his sword, in his right hand, a rope in his left hand, wreathed in flame, clad in rags, looking angry, with a servants hairstyle & 2 fangs. 1 pointing to heaven, 1 to earth. there is significance to his appearance but i don't wanna bore you lol suffice it to say there's a reason for each attribute & accessory.
he has 2 attendants, Kongara and Seitaku to aid him.
also while he looks mean, he is 'here to help' & kinda bound by compassion.. helps people on the path to enlightenment. his devotees perform fire rituals to him, a ritual involving standing under a waterfall & the epic 1000 day pilgrimage or Sennichi Kaihougyou around Mt. Hiei reciting his mantra & visiting various holy sites.
Fudo is the japanese version of Acala.
Acala is present in indian Vajrayana buddhism, Fudo in Shingon & a few others i think. Acala is also the name of the eighth of the ten stages of the path to become a bodhisattva.

not quite complete but not too shabby either :)

"The modern beret is derived from the traditional hat of Basque shepherds and was first mass-produced in 19th century France and Spain, countries with which it remains associated."

I didn't know that! That is awesome. 8) Berets are cool. :D
Hau ez nekien! Izugarria da. 8) Txapelak primerakoak dira. :D
