Do you call that teaching?
It really baffles me, how did you say I should not make my lecture about multiculturality, because it wouldn't leave enough time to play your videos there. Do you think those are good at teaching what multiculturality really is? A song saying good things about our the country with videos of food, dances, and landscapes and carnivals. Sure, I can see the value of it, but that is NOT multiculturality. It would leave them with the wrong impression, "oh, I know how salsa looks like, and how the landscapes are there (and that's a big mistake, if more than half of our inhabitants live at the four major cities, why are all those videos showing deserts and the sea and plants and stuff, that is so cliché. But you guys wouldn't understand that, I know because I've tried to explain and failed before getting a chance of being started, I just get ignored right?) and knowing these two things now I know all about Colombia!" What about things like values, did you know for example that if I told I sent my parents to a nursing home to an American they wouldn't bat an eyelash, while it would be a big issue in Colombia and around here? Or did you know that if I said I broke a rule to do something better, a Brazilian would let out a knowing smile while a German would be totally aghast? Multiculturality is about understanding how other people who vary in things like gender, social class, country of origin and religion have different ways to see and interact with the world, and how we should be aware of that instead of making snap judgements on those who are just different than us, that is waay more important than what food do we eat, unless it comes with a reflexion about how the food we eat depends on whether there are seasons or not, and what kind of food is accessible to each social class, and other things... food is just scratching the surface and calling it a day.
I know why you do it. If you had it your way, you probably would spend the whole class playing videos and not doing anything, it's so much easier right? And yeah, I accept my lectures go on a bit slow and are not that great, but that's because my portuguese sucks and my teaching skills are green but... if I don't put myself out there and do it anyway how will my portuguese ever get better and my teaching skills ever improve? I can hold the audience interest damnit, it isn't like they are getting bored, I see them paying attention and thinking, what do you have against that? We didn't travel 4500 km to play some videos you know.
And I don't like this democracy thing we have going on around here. Our core group consists of four people. One never says anything. And two always agree with each other. Basically, that leaves the way we make things at the will of you two. I know I have character enough to override it, to do what I want regardless, and you wouldn't have the guts to stop me, but... imposing my will on others goes against my morals. But if you ask the question, why don't I come up with ideas, and why don't I take the initiative more often, it's because I know it's no use. Now I'll just sit and read something while you play your videos, and then answer some questions about if we dance like that all the time, and wait until the bell rings. Oh and btw, I'm writing this because if you ever touch the issue, I want to be able to say everything I want to say, I'm sure not avoiding it. Not socially acceptable to just say this out of the blue though, so I'll wait until the time is ripe.
