If I had a daughter who I suspected of stealing my peas, I'd still not rule her out even if I'd seen her eating beans. She might be saving them for later, for example.

Does chewing the peas make you fart more or less?

I just asked an AI chatbot and it says chewing would usually make you fart less:

Chewing a type of food thoroughly can influence flatulence in a few ways, but generally, it tends to decrease flatulence. Here's why:

Improved Digestion: Chewing thoroughly breaks down food more effectively, making it easier for your digestive enzymes to process it. Better digestion can reduce the amount of undigested food reaching your intestines, where fermentation by bacteria produces gas.

Reduced Swallowing of Air: Properly chewing food can decrease the amount of air you swallow while eating. Swallowed air is a common contributor to gas and bloating.

Slower Eating: Chewing well often encourages slower eating, which can also reduce the amount of air swallowed and improve digestion.

However, it's worth noting that some foods naturally produce more gas when fermented by gut bacteria (e.g., beans, certain vegetables, carbonated drinks). Chewing these foods thoroughly won't eliminate their potential to cause flatulence, but it can help mitigate some of the excess gas produced.

In summary: Chewing your food thoroughly generally helps decrease flatulence by improving digestion and reducing swallowed air, even if the food itself has a tendency to cause gas.

In chemistry, grinding speeds up the reaction, so my theory is that munching on beans causes a short, big fart. 8)

That's why the robot said "in general." It's a very clever robot even if it does hallucinate sometimes.
