Why is it that the term "go off" means to activate? Wouldn't that be "go on?"

I had thought that the term 'Go Off' referred to raging verbal abuse directed at someone....
"If he does not stop humming that stupid song, I'm 2 seconds from going off on him!"

It won't.
As everyone knows, theDwarves have Tunneled underneath Ankh Morepark for decades (centuries?).
Those tunnels are much too well-reinforced to collapse.
As the Apprentice to the Sub-Assistant to the Second-In-Command to the Secretary to Lord Vetinary himself, Kevinjh should be fully aware of that.
Perhaps that was a test question.

no, not that meaning. I mean when people say their car alarm "goes off." If it was off, how would it be activated? It has to be "on" to sound. Therefore, "goes off" makes no sense.
