My father led by example, taking small portions so that he would always clear his plate and appear polite.
All he ever left on the plate was a few bits of ground, black pepper or a touch of beet juice (he loved beets).
I tend to do the same. I take very small portions and try to clear my plate. It's also nicer when washing up
the plates after a meal.
