Can squirrels predict how bad an upcoming winter is going to be based on how much food they drop from trees like acorns and such?

It was never this bad before. I've never had to shovel so many acorns into a fire pit just to keep the backyard tidy.

I haven't worn skates since the 80s.
I know the rink I used to use closed down, but there are apparently 4 others in the city now.
