Yeah, I don't really know why she calls me that.
I think of middle-aged men when I hear "Jim."
I'm a 16-year-old girl. (Don't make fun of me.)

Maybe you could make special arrangements about earplugs? In my case, even being within 2m of the foyer during Homecoming was painful (as in the sharp, potentially ear-damaging kind), which could be a reason, but no one else was bothered near the speakers. Of course, there are numerous possible issues other than sound, but this could be a start.

Have you asked the chap? It sounds as though you are very passionate about him indeed.

The back of the room isn't too loud, so I don't think sound is an issue. It was his first high school dance, but he got used to the sound pretty quickly. I think he's just nervous because last time at homecoming he:

1) didn't know how to dance, and
2) made the unintentional mistake of leaving without telling me in the middle of the dance.

He apologized, of course, because he's a nice person, but I think he's a bit "once bitten, twice shy" about it.

I've told him that if he wants to go to Winter Formal, I can go with him, otherwise I can go with a group of friends, so it's really not a big deal if he doesn't want to go. I know he's had a bad experience at homecoming and he's probably a little afraid to go to another dance. (I don't blame him. The music at homecoming was terrible.)

From what I gather (but keep in mind that I gather poorly even on the internet), maybe simple, explicit reassurance that nothing too bad happened could help. Is it possible (and plausible) to wait somewhere that does not require dancing?

Hmm. I've never been to the place where the dance will be held, so it's hard to say.

You mean we're caught in a landslide, with no escape from reality?
