Trafford's a bit of a trek for you isn't it mate

Well, I got a tram to Rochdale, a train from Rochdale to Manchester Victoria, then a 256 bus from Piccadilly Gardens to the hospital. I assumed it'd not be far from the football and cricket grounds, but it was miles away, then there was a thirty minute hold up for roadworks. Could have travelled to London on the train in less time.

Tell me about it

It literally takes quicker for me to get from Manchester airport to Schiphol Amsterdam than it does for me to get from Stockport to the Trafford Centre

I suppose there's pros and cons to both watching something dubbed and watching something with subtitles

I'm kind of on the fence a bit with it

I'm okay with dubbed material provided that I don't look too closely at the characters' faces - if you do, it becomes obvious that they aren't actually saying the words and that can alienate the viewer from the characters and the story.

Having to read the subtitles means having continually to take your eyes off the rest of the screen completely, not ideal! It might be just about worth it if the subtitles are of excellent quality, but all too often in the UK I've found that they often bear little resemblance to what's being said, even when it's in English - I get the impression that these low grade subtitles must be produced by artificial intelligence.

It depends. Sometimes I can skim over them and take them in quickly, but at other times I get bogged down with analysing the content, and comparing it with the original spoken version. I sometimes end up rewinding and listening to a phrase or sentence over and over, especially when it's in a language I have some knowledge of, eg French.

I tried to watch something dubbed earlier today and it was like the voices were coming from elsewhere and it was just this weird English accent they used. It was as if it had been manufactured. I turned it off in the end before I threw my shoes at the telly

I can manage subtitles but I have a habit of walking out of the room in the middle of watching something (whether I'm enjoying it or not) and then I forget what I'm watching. Subtitles would only make this issue worse I think

I prefer subtitles. Dubbing to me is kind of unsettling in an uncanny valley sort of way. It’s similarly weird when a video’s audio and visual are out of sync.

Yeah I get what you're saying there

Yeah, dubbing drives me mental. I can only handle it if I'm not really watching the dubbed show.

I'm quite happy to read subtitles.

The original Nikita movie with Jean Reno and Tcheki Keyro was fantastic and the subtitles were really easy to follow. Likewise with a movie called Them, although there wasn't an awful lot of dialogue in that if I remember it right

My dad is hard of hearing so I grew up watching everything with subtitles. There was a point where it was distracting for me if there weren't subtitles

In high school they would often play videos with English dialogue and Spanish subtitles. That really bothered me because I have just enough knowledge of Spanish that my eyes were always drifting down to the subtitles and comparing them with the dialogue I fully understood and I'd completely forget about the point of the video.

I can deal with dubbing in cartoons more easily than in live-action, but still prefer subs.

What really gets me is when there's both subtitles and audio in English but they don't match.

Regarding previous comments, it must be nice to hop on and off of commuter railways. I’ve used the rails when traveling outside of the US, but it’s not an option where I live.

I need to get stuck into some good telly or something me. Like proper escapism
