This whole unpoplar thread has devolved into an argumentum ad "populus".

What's funny about poplar trees?

They're unpopular in most places because they have an invasive root system that clogs drainage pipes and undermines your garden while providing very little shade or shelter. A spectacularly near useless nuisance.

(Uh oh. Perhaps not a good way to be popular in a poplar forest).

lool :jester:

populus in Latin means two things - either "people" or "poplar tree".

Kip made a funny pun by changing "argumentum ad populum" to "argumentum ad populus"....still it should go with the accusative, ergo it should be "ad populum" but then the witticism would be lost.....

I'll choose the unpopular side of things...

Theoretically, the only way to be welcome here is to be unwelcome. (Or pay Krafty a hefty bribe). The only way to be popular here is to be unpopular... and the only way to be unpopular is to be popular.

(Go for the bribe option... it's easier).

Alright, I am offering up my bribe to Kraftie. Please humbly consider my admittance to this club.

Poplar was a word in my crossword puzzle today so thank you for the above posts!

Ah! Good! We'll be looking forward to some more disagreeable (unpopular) palaver here then?

Thanks, Boo Radley! Now I could get a milkshake!

Poplars are popular in Missouri, the Show-me State!

Since I'm short and squat (unpopular) I'd better not go to Missouri, eh?

If you're able to show common sense, you'll be well-received in Missouri.

Harry Truman, past president, wasn't particularly tall. And he was well-respected in Missouri. He had some bumps in the road--but he did all right in the end.

Come now, Krafty, if I was to swallow enough nonsense to be common I'd be popular and well-received everywhere that common is called sense.

Common sense is very UNcommon.

I don't mean "common" in the "plebian" sense. I mean "sense," arising from life experience.

Uh huh. As in those that "have seen the light" and buy Snake Oil by the gallon?

I'm definitely not a "seeing the light" kind of guy.

I steer clear of snakes--unless there's a snake handler nearby.

Snake oil carries a particular odious aura.

Never have I been for fads or trends in that I tend to stick to unorthodox methods and concepts etc..

The Unpopular Members Club seems to be notably short of unpopular members.
Curious.
