Maybe you could gently challenge their thoughts with logic of the "I would not be here for you if I didn't care" variety.
Maybe they need to hear it repeatedly in order for it to get in over the walls.

People in that frame of mind are basically in the dark and you have keep reassuring them until they regain confidence in their life. Need the positive to outweigh the negative. How many times do people tear down the walls they build? Has to be rare. Usually someone else does it.
I was pulling weeds and pulled poison ivy and was like I just pulled poison ivy. Thought it was baby tree because there were a bunch of those too but the whole red vine thing kinda proved that wrong.. Oh look there’s more. But it’s poison ivy.. hmm too late might as well keep going
